This is one of my favorite desserts to make: simple, healthy, yet totally satisfying and decadent to the point where you stop thinking it’s good-for-you. The secret?
Avocado. Yep, chocolate mousse made out of avocados (along with a handful of other nutritious ingredients). Avocados are a healthy fat, and, yes, a fat. One of the biggest myths out there is that low-fat or fat-free is healthier. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Those marketing labels are often just a clue that there is more sugar (which causes weight gain) or chemicals to replace the fat. Healthy fats keep you satisfied longer, therefore, often leading to healthy weight loss or maintenance! Win win!
-½ banana (use an entire one if you like the taste of banana…it will come through)
-½ cup cacao powder (use more for a richer, darker chocolate taste)
-2 tablespoons natural sweetener (I prefer raw honey – not vegan – or dates / date syrup – a great low glycemic option – use desired amount for desired level of sweetness)
-1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil (melted / liquid)
-½ teaspoon sea salt
1. Mix all ingredients in a food processor until velvety smooth. You could also use a high powered blender; it just takes a little more work on your part to scrape down the sides.
2. Refrigerate for at least an hour to allow coconut oil to set and thicken.
3. Enjoy by itself or with fruit!
